Social Networking

Social networking has taken over our lives! Almost everyone is on Facebook and Twitter, but is this a good thing?

In my opinion having a social media profile is OK as long as you watch what you post. Some people post some inappropriate things online which can get them in a lot of trouble. For example, my social media profiles have very specific settings onto who can see what I post and what personal information others can see. I have it specifically set to only some of my close friends can see my personal information such as my cell phone and my home address. Only people that have been to my house and the people who have my cell phone number are the only people who can see this information on my profile.

Should employers be allowed to ask prospective employees for their passwords to social media sites? Is this practice still legal in the United States?

Employers should not ask prospective employees for their passwords rather ask for the link to their social media page. Anybody who is smart will NEVER give out their password to anything!! Even Microsoft or Goggle, huge technology companies will never ask for your password as they can access your account from their servers. Anybody who says they are from a big name company and ask for your password is a fraud and should be reported to the police immediately. I live in the state of New Jersey and this is the law about employers asking for prospective employees passwords:

New JerseyA.B. 2878
Status: Aug. 28, 2013; Signed by Governor. Chapter No. 2013-155
Prohibits requirement to disclose user name, password, or other means for accessing account or service through electronic communications device by employers.

Do you know what your privacy settings are on the social media sites you use? Is there any information being shared publicly that you weren't aware was being shared?

I do know all my privacy settings on my social networking sites. Anyone under the age of 18 some social media sites have taken action to help protect valuable information of minors but after you turn 18 those settings are out the window and you must go back in and change them. I have everything blocked to the public unless you are my friend. So if a complete stranger was to visit my profile the only thing they could see is my profile picture and my gender, nothing about what I have been posting, my birthday, my address, or my cell phone number. I know what information I have shared on my social media profiles and I also know who can see it and who can't see it so no there has never been any infrmation being shared to the public that I was not aware of. I keep updating my settings as well to make sure personal information stays hidden from strangers. As these social networking sites release newer settings and security features I always check them out to see how I can further protect my sensitive information.

A special moment for a special radio sportscaster

The world of sports talk radio can be relentless especially in this town, but a Lafayette Hill fourth grader gives sports radio talk shows a breath of fresh air, and may even steal your heart.

It may sound like any local sports talk radio show, but take a peek inside the studio, sitting in a not-so-typical hosts chair is a not-so-typical host, who really knows his stuff.

"I bet you most of us didn't get the Packer Game. They can't execute blitzes and execute premium blitzes. Come on, 3 and 7? While you were with a great, great quarterback?" says Jamie Convey.
Every Saturday morning, 9 year old Jamie Convey hosts his own sports talk radio show on the internet.
It's an idea he came up with on his own this year, and it's not just a hobby, it's a passion, and quite possibly, a calling.

Jamie was born premature, and doctors soon discovered he had cerebral palsy. But he hasn't let a physical limitation keep him out of the game.

"I'm super impressed. He blows me away all the time with the knowledge he has," says Dad, Jim Convey.
"The first show, I was like, oh, I'm not sure if I want to do this. But I grew into it, and I realized it's something I'm really talented at," said Jamie.

The calls flood in, sometimes from regulars.
"Hey, Jamie it's Uncle Chris."
"Uncle Chris! Thanks for calling in on this Martin Luther King Day," Jamie said.
But on one special day, Jamie received a call from a very special first-time caller, the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Jamie? This is Merrill Reese calling. Tell me, who are you picking this week?" asked Merrill Reese.
"Merrill, Merrill, Merrill& you're putting me on the spot here! But I think the Steelers have may have the best chance to go all the way," said Jamie.

"Well, your show sounds terrific, and I want to wish you the best of luck," Merrill said.
"Well what about the nice surprise?" said Jamie to his audience. "I don't think anyone was expecting that; our thanks to Merrill Reese for being on with us today."

A special moment for a special kid, and for his father, who can't help but smile, at just how far he's come.
"As anyone out there with children with disabilities knows, it is absolutely life changing, and there isn't a minute of the day that you don't think about it. You just want the best for him, and you know I'd give anything to be the one stricken with the disability, and let him live the life that I've lived. But he is always had a positive attitude his entire life," said Jim Convey.

"There's a lot of stuff to do in the world," said Jamie. "You just have to find something to do, and I'm sure that a lot of people with disabilities find things to do that they really enjoy, as I have with my radio show."
When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said being a radio talk show host is just one of many possibilities. A lawyer is also high on his list.

It is hard to give Jamie and his intellect justice. You have to hear him for yourself. Check out Jamie's show every Saturday at 10:00am, and maybe even give him a call. You might be amazed.
Here's a link to Jamie's talk radio show:
"Hopefully, you'll join me next Saturday," Jamie tells his listeners, "until then, bye, bye."

THE GREAT GATSBY - Book Review #4

The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Dear Potential Readers,

The Great Gatsby is a good book but personally I didn't care for it. This book represented symbolism in many different ways. Two of the most common ways of symbolism is "The Valley of Ashes" and the "Eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg."

The Great Gatsby is an okay book about many different things and different situations. It shows how things can’t ever be the way they seem. It starts off with a Yale graduate named Nick Caraway moving to a town called West Egg. He knows that he is going to have a lot of things there, some good and some bad, but he has no idea in what’s really in for him.

Nick was fortunate enough to be able to live to this millionaire named Jay Gatsby. Little does he know, he just moved in next to his new best friend. It takes a little bit of time but they finally meet at a party thrown by Jay Gatsby himself. Jay Gatsby throws a lot of parties. Many people think that he throws great parties. They can last up until 3 am in the morning.

All Gatsby wants is to see a woman, Nick’s cousin named Daisy. The only problem is that Daisy is now married. Even though she is married, she’s still in love with Jay. She doesn’t tell her husband, but she does. What Daisy doesn’t know is that her husband has another girl that he has on the side.

This book is a boring book and really self-centered and has a lot of symbolism. It is not a book I would read again.

Thank you,
Vincent D’Antonio

IPOD- Book Review #3

IpodIpod by Kelby Scott

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Dear Potential Reader,

The best iPod ever made……..

There are many different iPods in this world. There is the iPod classic, iPod

touch, iPod nano, iPod mini, the iPod touch and many more. These iPods are built so you can

listen to music. Also, they have different generations which give these iPods different features.

Since there are features, there is one iPod that has features that is better than the rest, and

that’s the fourth generation iPod touch.

The fourth generation is the best iPod ever made. One reason is because its

memory. The iPod touch fourth generation has different types of gigabytes that it comes in. For

instance, you can buy it with eight gigabytes. Eight gigabytes can hold up to one thousand six

hundred thirty eight songs. Then the iPod goes to thirty-two gigabytes. A thirty-two gigabyte

iPod touch can hold three thousand thirty songs. The last and highest amount of memory that

this generation of iPod can go too is sixty-four gigabytes. Sixty-four gigabytes can hold up to

seven thousand songs.

This iPod has more features than the others. For starters, they have installed

cameras in them. That means that you can take pictures and videos. That also means that it can

take pictures and record videos. Also it can hold full length movies. When you watch full length

movies it uses more of your battery faster. For instance, if you just listened to music, you could

have up to forty hours. If you are watching videos, movies, looking at pictures, playing with

apps, or all of them, the battery will be good for up to seven hours at a time.

When it comes to buying a good iPod touch, the price of it matters. You don’t

want to buy something that is very expensive when you can buy it for half the price. The fourth

generation iPod touch can be bought at a mildly good price. You can buy an 8 gigabyte iPod

touch for $229. You can buy a 32 gigabyte iPod touch for $299 and a 64 gigabyte iPod touch for

$399.

These are just some of the many features when you buy an iPod. It’ll make things

easier knowing exactly what you are looking for.

THE LIGHTENING THIEF - Book Review #2

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series #1)The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dear Potential Reader,

This book was great, suspense and drama filled my mind while reading this book. Not one second did I ever think about putting this book down. Though I wouldn’t read it a second time, because I never read a book more than once. From start to ...more This book was great, suspense and drama filled my mind while reading this book. Not one second did I ever think about putting this book down. Though I wouldn’t read it a second time, because I never read a book more than once. From start to end, the book just keeps dragging me into the world of Percy. I love Greek mythology personally, and reading this book taught me a lot about it. I was disappointed at the ending book it was a huge cliff hanger and at the time couldn’t afford the next book, but it was worth reading it. You should always experience the beginning of a tale, or you’ll never truly understand the rest. When Rick wrote "Go on with what your heart tells you, or you will lose all. That was really inspirational, and I think everyone should read this and really listen to what it means. In my opinion, I think it means don’t be afraid to do what you want, because in the end, you might lose something important to you. Another good one that Rick wrote was "Where's the glory in repeating what others have done?".

Some people like repeating what others have done for the attention, but I think you shouldn’t do good deeds for the attention of others. You should always do good things because you know it’s right, and probably shouldn’t ask anything for return, like attention or rewards. I recommend this book to anyone around the ages of 13, because Percy at the time, was 13 years old. You’ll see the decisions he make are similar to some of the things you’d do at that age. When I read this book I was 13, and it was very interesting cause I can almost put myself in the position of the main character. I love when stories get so vivid that I have the ability to do that. I would have loved to be a son of Greek God, Poseidon. I would recommend for teenagers to read this book along with the entire series of the books written by Rick Riordan. This series of books are really good and really excited to read! I would recommend any books in the series to people who are interested in Greek Gods so they would most likely like the book. Also if you love action and a book that waits till the end to tell you what you have been wondering to find the entire book.

THE OUTSIDERS - Book Review #1

The OutsidersThe Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my book review:

Dear Potential Reader,

The book The Outsiders is a very good but very active and kind of not appropriate book for all ages. This book is about 2 gangs that live on the opposite sides of town but have a history with each other. The poor gang or the “Greasers" and the rich gang that lives in the rich part of the town are called "Socs." These 2 gangs have done damage to each other before but not like it was in this book. Ponyboy Curtis is the youngest person in the Greasers and has 2 brothers. Darrel Curtis is Ponyboy's oldest brother. Also he other brother named Sodapop Curtis, Ponyboy's happy-go-lucky handsome brother. Also in the Greasers gang is Two-Bit Mathews who is the joker in the gang. Steve Randle Sodapop's best friend since grade school and also works with Sodapop at the gas station. Dallas Winston is the toughest hood in Ponyboy’s group of Greasers. He is also known as Dally. Finally for the main characters is Johnny Cade. He is a 16 year old greaser. Even though he has not been successful in school he tries his best to approach intellectual matters with steady concentration.

In the book The Outsiders I have 2 favorite quotes: My first favorite quote was directed to Ponyboy. Someone told Ponyboy “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold" This quote refers to the Robert Frost poem that Ponyboy recites to Johnny when the two hide out in the Windrixville Church in Chapter 9 when Johnny is lies dying in the hospital. My second favorite quote is "Dally was so real he scared me." This quote is during Ponyboy and Johnny in the abandoned church when they thinko of Dally.

Kids that are bullied in their school and even kids who simply feel alienated can look at the story Ponyboy tells and realize that they are not alone in their unfortunate circumstances. In fact, with such dramatic displays of violence in The Outsiders, these kids may be able to put their experiences into an even better perspective. On the other hand, kids that are often bullying others are offered the chance to see life from the perspective of the bullied, and hopefully realize that they are not so different.

I also think that is story is a very good story to teach younger teens because i think that the violence and the actions of others in the story may portray a negative influence on the more negative students in your class. Also teachers it wills most greatly if you read this story with a mature group of kids. Some kids may act immature to the story and how they use foul language. I do recommend the book for people who have not read this book but this book is very good and can teach a very good lesson to good kids.

MY READING HISTORY ESSAY

Vincent D’Antonio LAL
September 24, 2010 Reading History Essay

I have been learning LAL for a long time but now i am going to tell you my journey from the past to the present day. What do you think literacy means? Well in my own words literacy means to learn how to read and write at the appropriate grade level you are in. IF you wanna know what the dictionary definition is the quality or state of being literate, esp. the ability to read and write. Was your definition the same or close to the dictionary definition? How do we apply our literacy to our everyday life? Well we apply our everyday literacy by reading and writing to express ourselves in stories and other forms of writing. For example, we write poems to express our feelings inside of us. Also we write persuasive essays to persuade someone to our side of the argument. The roots of literacy were planted around when i was like 5 years old. At that time i was able to start talking and when i started to write and read books.
Let me ask you who/what influenced you to start reading? Well the person who influenced me was Dr.Seuss. Also his type of writing and creativity of his books also influenced me to start reading books. My first experiences with reading was very early in my life but it was very good to experience reading because Dr. Seuss was an awesome person back then and still is. Some of my favorite nursery rhymes were Humpty Dumpty and some of my fairytales are dragon tales, Bob the Builder and some other childish shows that are from today.
The elementary School i attended was Winslow Township Upper Elementary School #6. When i was in third grade some books that interest me were the Animorphs Seires, The Star Wars Saga and some other fiction books around that time that were very popular with the 3rd grade. Was there a teacher that helped me get a habit of reading? Why yes there was and her name was Mrs. Nichols. She was a very nice teacher in some many ways.
The middle school i attended was Winslow Township Middle School. In my middle school years my favorite authors were Shel Silverstein, a poet that wrote children poem books, authors of Car Magazines or Car history books. Well the genres i liked in middle school were automotive books and some other fiction books but to this day they mostly stay the same.
The books i would like to read about are sport cars soccer and the history of some interesting things in the technology of computers. Well for instance the text we read everyday is off our cell phones. We as the new generation are texting people alot more than in the previous years. Do i consider myself as a literate person? Why yes i do. i don’t know anybody who would say they aren't’ because if you are not then you are not bale to read or write.
At this moment of time my feeling for reading is kinda been lost over the years because of the amount of work i have to do by hand and other things to do for other things. What am i reading right now? The book i am reading is The Bugatti Veryon: Behind The Scenes. literacy is important because if you don’t learn it then you wont be able to read and write stories for your teachers. Plus in high school you get alot of research papers so you need to know how to speak right to get a good grade. literacy has helped me though out my life by guiding me through school to learn the most i can to to my best.
